Best Facial Serums to Target Your Skin Concerns
When it comes to a skincare routine and addressing your skin’s needs, there’s one step that you should implement: serums! Serums are different from facial oils or moisturizers because, not only is it more lightweight, but they have ingredients that target your specific needs.
Once I started adding serums to address my skin’s needs, my skin improved drastically. There are so many serums out there, and it can be hard to choose the right one.
In this blog, I’ll share:
Types of serums
Important ingredients in serums
Best serums for all skin types
Let’s target our specific needs with serums! Give your skin the love and ingredients it needs.
Types of serums
Serums are especially important because they have the ability to go deep into the skin to address the skin’s concerns. It’s really treating your specific needs, which is typically why serums tend to be more pricey. It’s doin a lot of work. It’s actually important to do this before moisturizers because after you’ve cleansed, your skin is ready to absorb nutrients and shit. The types of serum are:
1. Anti-aging serums
Anti-aging serums help to reduce and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The one ingredient that’s usually in anti-aging serums is retinol. Retinol helps to boost your cell repair and cell renewal process, which is needed to help the skin look young and fresh. It helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, but it also helps with skin texture.
Other active ingredients that are in anti-aging serums tend to be vitamin C, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. Overall, anti-aging serums help to boost collagen and plump the skin.
Olay - Regenerating Serum ($20)
Estee Lauder - Advanced Night Repair Serum ($53)
BeautyStat Cosmetics - Universal C Skin Refiner ($85)
2. Brightening serums
Brightening serums help with dullness and hyperpigmentation. The one ingredient that you’d typically want in a brightening serum is vitamin C. It’s a very powerful antioxidant that helps to fight dark spots, maintain the skin’s barrier and protect against sun damage.
Other active ingredients in brightening serums tend to be lactic acid, glycolic acid, and vitamin E. Overall, brightening serums help to even out the skin tone and leave your skin brighter.
Bliss - Bright Idea Vitamin C + Tri-Peptide Brightening Serum ($28)
Perricone MD - Vitamin C Ester Brightening Serum ($69)
Sunday Riley - C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum ($85)
3. Hydrating serums
Hydrating serums are there to help lock the moisture in your skin and to avoid dryness. This is different from moisturizer because it penetrates the skin, whereas moisturizers live on the surface of the skin. The serum is ensuring that your skin stays hydrated by binding water with the skin. The one ingredient that helps with dryness is hyaluronic acid. Not only is it maintaining hydration, but it plumps and tightens the skin.
Other active ingredients in hydrating serums tend to be glycerin and ceramide. Hydrating serums are helping to lock that moisture in.
Important note when using hyaluronic acid: make sure you’re applying it to damp skin!
Vichy - Mineral 89 Skin Fortifying Daily Booster ($30)
La Roche-Posay - Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum ($36.99)
Drunk Elephant - B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum ($48)
4. Repair serums
Repair serums are restoring the skin, reducing acne scars, and hydrating the skin. Repair serums are typically acne fighting or just for general restoration of the skin. Depending on the repairs needed for the skin, the ingredients that are present are typically retinol and niacinamide. Retinol, as mentioned earlier, has a lot of benefits like anti-aging, but it also helps with improving dark spots. Niacinamide helps to smooth texture and the appearance of pores.
Other active ingredients in repair serums tend to be vitamin E and other antioxidants. Repair serums are really there to target any reparation the skin may need.
Good Molecules - Discoloration Correcting Serum ($12)
Peach & Lily - Glass Skin Refining Serum ($39)
Dermalogica - Age Bright Clearing Serum ($69)
My personal favorite face serum is still Dezi Skin - Claro Que C ($66). This is such a great morning serum that has helped improve my skin so much. I will stand by this product forever.
When it comes to face serums, they are definitely more pricey, but that’s only because of the benefits and amount of work it’s doing. Just remember, use it after cleanser but before moisturizer! Serums can be tricky because there are so many different ones. Luckily, serums can be layered, but also, there are some serums that target many different needs!
When it comes down to skincare, understanding your skin and addressing its specific needs is the easiest way to break it down. Please give love to your skin as it’s exposed to so much in a day!
