Level Up Your Makeup Game: Tips and Tricks for Beginners

There are so many makeup tips that I wish I knew when I first started doing my makeup. I learned from watching a lot of YouTube and just practicing everyday or every week.

My makeup has come a long way- from BB creams to shadow sticks to dip brow, I’ve gone through all the stages of mishaps and found these makeup tips to be the easiest and most helpful when it comes to a full face of makeup.

In this post, I’m going to share the tips that I wish someone told me. Like, y’all really let me leave the house looking a hot mess. Anywho, here we go:

1. Prep your skin!!!

When I mean a good base is necessary for your makeup, I mean it. Please make sure that your skin is clean and properly moisturized before you even apply your primer. And please, don’t forget the primer! This will help the makeup really stick to your skin and stay for hours.

Primer recommendations:

2. PAT complexion products into the skin

Omg if you’re dragging your product on your skin, stop that immediately. Foundation, concealer, liquid blush, liquid contour/bronzer- whatever the face product, it needs to be patted into the skin, not dragged. And pat UP!! You want your face to be lifted

Favorite tool: powder puffs

Pro tip: Use the powder puff to blend your complexion, liquid products!! (I’ve had the best full coverage concealer and foundation from using a powder puff to blend)

3. Start with drugstore makeup

Honestly, if you don’t really know what you’re doing, I’d start with drugstore makeup because you’re not wasting so much money on something you don’t necessarily know how to use. I just feel like a good rule of thumb is to start with these products and then move your way up. This is honestly one of the less important makeup tips, but I think it’s easier to start with cheaper products.

4. Set your face!!

It is best to set your face with powder and spray!! This step is so important to really lock your makeup into place.

Setting powder and setting spray recommendations:

5. Work with what you’ve got!

Use what you’ve got!!! I used to use eyeshadow as a brow product, eyeliner, and even blush. I didn’t have the means to buy more things, and what I had worked, so I just did what I could. You don’t need so many products to complete a look, use what you have!

6. Practice!

This is possibly the most important tip as a beginner! It really does take practice along with trial and error to really understand makeup. Watch videos. Do it as much as you can - then you can achieve your favorite makeup look every time!

Conclusion

Makeup is for everyone! It doesn’t have to be intimidating - it can be fun! Allow yourself time to practice, allow yourself time to be creative. You can come to realize that it is an art and your face is the canvas. Use that canvas!
